•• * Однажды на встрече Клуба переводчиков моей коллеге из ООН Линн (Елене Владимировне) Виссон был задан вопрос об «особенностях поздравления» в русской и американской культурах. Вопрос действительно интересный с точки зрения сопоставления культур, и ответ на него содержал очень интересные наблюдения:
•• «Русские все время поздравляют. С наступающим! С праздником! С днем рождения! В Америке – значительно меньше. С праздниками, как правило, не поздравляют вообще, а с днем рождения принято поздравлять только детей, ну может быть близких, членов семьи. Для взрослых день рождения – сугубо частное дело, за исключением юбилеев, круглых дат у известных лиц».
•• Хотел бы добавить несколько своих наблюдений. Все-таки и в Америке принято поздравлять (в «нашем» значении этого слова) с Рождеством и Новым годом. Причем как открытками – в последние годы все чаще электронными – так и при встрече в эти дни, называемые the holiday season.
•• (Кстати, различие значений слов поздравить и to congratulate проявляется в том, что поздравительные открытки называются greeting cards.) Поздравляют и с наступающим Рождеством, в формулировке Have a merry Christmas, но, в отличие от нашего обычая, – всегда в конце разговора, при прощании.
•• С днями рождения, по моим наблюдениям, дело обстоит несколько сложнее, чем описала Линн. Люди не афишируют свой день рождения и не приглашают отметить его дома. Однако существует довольно распространенная практика surprise birthday party, которую «группа товарищей» новорожденного устраивает в тайне (иногда весьма относительной) от него. Впрочем, вполне можно согласиться, что принятый у нас ритуал поздравления с развернутыми пожеланиями и т.п. в Америке и большинстве западных стран отсутствует. Кстати, по-английски практически не говорят to congratulate someone on his birthday; естественно и идиоматично – to wish someone a happy birthday. (Мимоходом можно сказать, что в застолье крайне редки тосты.)
•• И еще о «разбегании» значений слов поздравить и to congratulate. Удивительно, что все известные мне двуязычные словари дают эти слова как «абсолютные эквиваленты». Другая картина в толковых словарях. По Ожегову, поздравить – приветствовать по случаю чего-н. приятного, радостного. П. с праздником. У Хорнби – близкое определение, хотя можно «почувствовать разницу»: tell sb. that one is pleased about sth. happy or fortunate that has come to him (вообще-то несколько неуклюжее определение, что не характерно для Хорнби). А вот определения из Oxfоrd American и American Heritage Dictionary выявляют смысловое различие совершенно недвусмысленно: to praise and tell ( a person) that one is pleased at his achievement or good fortune; to express praise or acknowledgement for the achievement or good fortune of. Вот этот элемент «похвалы», «высокой оценки» – специфичен для английского слова и отсутствует в русском.
•• В выступлениях делегатов в ООН часто звучит (довольно формальная) фраза I would like to congratulate X on his statement/the report that he submitted to the committee, которую мы по инерции обычно переводим я хотел бы поздравить X c его выступлением/докладом, что по-русски совершенно не звучит. Конечно, речь идет о высокой оценке или даже глубоком удовлетворении (в скобках замечу, что словосочетание высоко оценить во многих случаях лучше переводить глаголами to praise или to applaud).
•• Существует, правда, мнение, что русское поздравлять в результате «интерференции» английского языка теперь нередко, особенно в научной среде, применяется по тем же самым поводам, что и congratulate: Поздравляем наших коллег с замечательным сообщением/докладом. Мне все-таки кажется, что, когда такое «поздравление» имеет чисто формальный характер, по-русски предпочтительны и более частотны другие формы выражения высокой оценки.
•• Еще одно свидетельство того, что различие глубинного значения глаголов поздравлять и to congratulate не освоено словарями – перевод слов self-congratulation, self-congratulatory. БАРС предлагает несколько странное поздравление самого себя и длинное восторги по поводу своих поступков. В АBBYY Lingvo selfcongratulation отсутствует, а self-congratulatory переведено поздравляющий самого себя. Ближе всего к истине Oxford Russian Dictionary, где self-congratulation – самодовольство, но лучше, на мой взгляд, самовосхваление. Self-congratulatory, конечно, самодовольный, хвастливый или восхваляющий самого себя. Все-таки в ядре значения английского to congratulate – похвала.
•• С другой стороны, Поздравляю ( вас)!, как в прямом смысле, так и в саркастическом, противоположном по существу употреблении эквивалентно английскому Congratulations!
•• Неполное совпадение значений также между глаголами праздновать и to celebrate. По-английски, например, вполне естественно прозвучала фраза The memorial service for Senator Wellstone will be a celebration of his life. American Heritage в качестве третьего значения дает to extol; praise. По-русски в этих случаях иногда говорят гимн его жизни. В одном из эпизодов романа Филипа Рота The Human Stain аналогичная фраза звучит на похоронах: We have come here to celebrate a life. В русской традиции очень трудно подобрать что-либо подходящее (у нас все-таки приходят «проводить в последний путь», и любая иная формулировка звучала бы неуместно). Может быть, воздать хвалу жизни человека или более нейтральное, формальное отдать дань памяти/ уважения, может быть вместе вспомнить (но, конечно, не помянуть – это уже ситуация поминок, которые на Западе не приняты; правда, иногда после мемориальной службы или похорон имеет место reception).
•• Вот как получилось – «начал за здравие, а кончил за упокой».
